Experimental MCP: Use Pelicart in Claude or ChatGPT

Connect Pelicart to Claude, ChatGPT or another AI app to search your stores and fill your carts from there: the same carts as on WhatsApp. This feature is experimental, and you still check out in the store’s app.

Before you start

You need Pelicart on WhatsApp with a store linked (your stores), and this server address:

https://www.pelicart.com/mcp

You don’t need a client ID or API key. Other AI apps that connect to remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers with a sign-in step work too.

Connect Claude

  1. On claude.ai or the desktop app, go to Customize > Connectors > Add > Add custom connector.
  2. Name it “Pelicart”, paste the address and keep the suggested sign-in settings.
  3. Sign in with your WhatsApp number.
  4. In a chat, check Pelicart is on under + > Connectors.

Connect ChatGPT

  1. On the web, turn on Developer mode under Settings > Security and login.
  2. Open Plugins and create an app with +.
  3. Name it “Pelicart”, enter the address as the MCP server URL and choose OAuth.
  4. Sign in with your WhatsApp number.
  5. In a chat, choose Developer mode from the + menu and turn on Pelicart.

Some ChatGPT plans only let connectors read, so ChatGPT can search but not add to your cart. OpenAI’s developer mode help lists which plans can add.

Sign in with your WhatsApp number

The Pelicart sign-in page shows which app is asking to connect. Check it’s the app you’re setting up. Then enter your Pelicart WhatsApp number and the code Pelicart sends you on WhatsApp. Only the newest code works.

Only numbers already on Pelicart get a code. If none comes and the number is right, message Pelicart on WhatsApp, then select Send a new code.

Things to ask

Ask the app in your own words, like:

  • “find halaal chicken on special at pick n pay”
  • A recipe photo with “add this to my checkers sixty60 cart”
  • “what do i buy every week at woolworths?”

Without a store name, the app uses your default store. Changing it in the app, like “make pick n pay my default store”, changes it on WhatsApp too.

If an item is out of stock, Pelicart asks the app to add the closest in-stock item and tell you about the swap (substitutes).

If you ask the app to connect a store, Pelicart sends a button to your WhatsApp, and you link the store there.

What’s different from WhatsApp

Using Pelicart through an AI app differs from WhatsApp in these ways:

  • Some things happen elsewhere:
    • In the store’s app: checkout, payment and delivery slots (cart)
    • On WhatsApp: backups, linking stores and your account (commands)
    • In either: your delivery address
  • No saved preferences: tell the app what you like (preferences)
  • Its own judgement: it might add staples like salt, or buy pack sizes that don’t match a recipe (recipes)
  • No WhatsApp receipt: Pelicart doesn’t send a receipt for items the app adds
  • It may double up: if you’ve shopped on WhatsApp too, ask it to check your cart first
  • Same plan: when your free orders run out, the app can’t search or add, and Pelicart sends a subscribe link on WhatsApp (pricing)

Connected apps

Pelicart tells you on WhatsApp whenever an app connects. Never share your login code: anyone with it can connect an app. To see connected apps:

/apps

After a “just connected” message you didn’t expect, disconnect every app:
